Agios Georgios Bay, the most beautiful bay in Corfu island.

Surrounded by high mountains covered by cypress-tree forests and century-old groves of olive trees, some of them dating back to the Venetian period, Agios Georgios Pagi has rightfully been considered the island’s most beautiful bay.

Agios Georgios Bay has been renowned for its long sweeping sands. There are also rocks in the region but they aren’t a major impediment during the holiday. The only unpleasant thing for some may be the algae, which sometimes during storms are brought to the shore by the waves. Few people know however these algae are very beneficial to human health, curing skin disease and cellulite problems most of us have.

The bay which has often been awarded the ‘blue flag’ for its cleanliness and facillities, is a safe area for everybody. Although sea urchins are not populating the bay, young children should be accompanied by an adult in some areas. Numerous hotels, villas, apartments and guest houses for all tastes with a wide variety of prices, ranging from expensive to affordable are spread all over the area. At the same time there are a lot of pubs, taverns and restaurants with traditional cuisine which can make your stay here a very pleasurable experience. This is the ideal place for all those looking for a peaceful, restful vacation far from the stressful daily life, for couples and families.

Located 31 kilometers from capital Kerkyra, Agios Georgios Pagi or San Giorgio isn’t a busy place with a lively night life with loud music coming from everywhere but rather a quiet picturesque place where tourists can enjoy tranquillity in unforgettable surroundings.

For a more lively night it is easy to take a cab or a mini-bus to Sidary and Paleokastritsa. Transport fees are also affordable.

Here lies the medieval fortress of Angelokastro, built around 1241 by Michaelos Angelos Komnenos Doukas, Despot of Epirus. It was later enlarged and consolidated by his followers. Never conquered by enemies, the citadel was the westernmost stronghold of the Byzantine Empire and later of the Greek world, a strategic place against invaders. During the last major Turkish siege of the city in 1571, the locals again managed to repel the invaders who chose to plunder the surroundings instead. The city has an Acropolis with a church bearing the name of Archangel Michael. The city is in full reconstruction process carried out by the Greece-based Society for Byzantine Antiquities but remain still open to visitors with an admission fee of 2 euros. The Saint Kyriaki chapel lies hidden in a rock in the east side of the city. The mural paintings in the chapel date back to the 18th century. The castle and the fortress came under the ownership of Venice until 1797. Meanwhile the city had seen numerous attacks from the Genoan pirates and the Turks.

The Agios Georgios village has a population of nearly 70 people and a medieval church built in the 15th century. The nearest village is Prynilas a former Byzantine dominion first documented around 1200. The church dedicated to St. Nicholas dates back to the 14th century. Other near villages are Vatonies, Agros, Afionas where you can find numerous taverns and traditional shops. Those interested can also visit the Agios Atanasios monastery of Agros. The locals are very hospitable, and will certainly question you about your countries and try to convince you to buy their excellent home-made olive oil not suitable for cooking but only for salads. However, ‘the pearls of the region’ remain the isles of Othoni, Matraki, Erikoussa, Diaplo and Gravia which you can visit from Agios Georgios Pagi by means of the Sun Fun Club.

Kerkyra, Corfu town or little Venezia

As countess Flamburiari put it “Corfu town is Venice and Naples a thought of France more than a dash of England, apart of course from being Greek”.

Kerkyra or Corfu town in English is a real labirinth of narrow streets also called kantounia (those who have seen Venice will notice this aspect), only that instead of water, the streets here are paved with marble or stone slabs. The town is a delight for any visitor who will find a multitude of traditional shops, tavern or cafés which create the feeling than you are more in Italy than in Greece. These picturesque sites will certainly remain deeply etched in the memory of the visitor, the famous Liston café being a case in point.

As far as tourist spots are concerned, in this town, which in 2007 was declared Kastropolis and included in the Unesco heritage list, we find one of the most important religious and historical monuments, the Church of St. Spiridon, who is also the patron saint of the city. Due to its special history Kerkyra or the Little Venice is a unique city, the most visible influence being that left by the Venetians and its nobility.

In 1732 Corfu saw the setting up of the Ionian Academy, the first Academy of the modern Greece. In the Venetian period a Spianada, a pedestrian area was built in Corfu, where only the noblemen whose names were written in the City’s Golden Book were allowed to stroll.

Other tourist objectives worth visiting are the two fortified cities, the old and the new one, the Mon Repos Palace, The Mayor’s Palace, the Former Nobile Teatro di San Giacomo di Corfu, the St. Michael and George Palace, dating back to the British period and former residence of the British governor and the island’s senate, Liston, the circular tomb of Menecrates, the Roman baths, the Palaiopolis’ ruins, the Vlaherna Church close to the Pontiaconisi Island and the airport boasting one of the shortest and narrowest runway in Europe.

Nine kilometers away, in the Gastouri village, tourists can visit the Palace of the Austrian empress Elizabeth also dubbed Sissy.

Also worth visiting are the Byzantine Museum, the Serbian Army Museum, the History Museum, the ruins of the bridge built by Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm ll and ironically razed to the ground by German warplanes in 1943, the Archaeology Museum if you are a history enthusiast, as well as many other objectives which may require several days to visit.

The north-western region of Corfu is considered the most beautiful part of the island in terms of relief. More than 90% of the tourists who have been visiting Agios Georgios Pagi, particularly Germans and British come here to enjoy the unique landscape and to visit the bay surroundings. Tourists who have opted for individual tourism and not for the mass tourism, when one is surrounded by hundreds of people, will enjoy a certain array of daily activities.

Agios Georgios Pagi is not a suitable place for couch potatoes as there are so many places to see and explore. The place is recommended to all those who love both the sea and the mountain. It is a unique experience, more than just a simple sunbathe, in fact you don’t need to travel to Corfu for sunbathing, one can enjoy that in their own garden or while having barbeque near the pond at home.

First and foremost tourists are recommended to hire a boat (of 4 to 8 seats) from Sun Fun Club, for fees ranging from 60 euros per day (9:30-18.00) plus the fuel 20-40 euros (depending on the speed and the distance covered) in order to discover by themselves the island’s splendid and lonely beaches, lagoons and bays. You can hardly find a soul in these remote regions. According to the surveys conducted among the tourists, hiring a boat is by far the most beautiful experience of their holiday here. And the fact that participants can share the costs can also be an incentive. The landscape you are about to visit will surely take your breath away. And more than that, you will get a different perspective over the Corfu island from a hired boat.

Cars, scooters, ATVs, bicycles and motorcycles are also available for rent. Or you can try mountain trekking on horseback.

The region offers numerous hiking opportunities, long walks to the main tourist objectives and back, an activity very popular with the German tourists. Thus one can visit the Angelokastro fortress, the Afionas village with its unforgettable surroundings. Mountain bikers will not be disappointed either as the region offers excellent conditions for this activity. But if the tourist wants a dynamic and active holiday so that his or her adventure may appear unbelievable to those back home, here are some recommendations.

Sun Fun Club boast an over 30 year experience in watersports. All its boats are equipped with SOS sytems and the tourists are provided instructions on how to drive these boat. They also receive a map so that they may remain in the territorial waters. No one is allowed to leave in a boat until they have learnt how to drive it. Do not hesitate to include in your holiday schedule the opportunity of hiring a boat as you won’t need a license for it. In Greece no license is required for boats under 30 hp!

Such a boat will allow you to mount your own barbeque on one of the wonderful beaches in the north-western region. Or you can throw private parties on one of these beaches or islands, but for this you’ll need bigger, faster boats with skippers. Anyway this will also be an unforgetabble experience.

You may also take a trip on Mathraki island and admire the most beautiful sunset in the whole Greece. Groups no bigger than 12-14 people can reach the island in glass-bottom ships driven by experienced skippers and crews offering truly astonishing panoramic underwater vision.

Those who hire the boat can benefit from special discounts for diverse water sport activities such as: water skiing, mono skiing, banana & ring rides, kayaking and so forth. Sun Fun Club also offers boat taxi services taking tourists in one-day mini-trips to Paleokastritsa (in exchange for a return ticket of 25 euro). Worth visiting are the coves, the sea caves and the beaches in the area, where one can admire ‘the petrified ship of Odysseus, then at request, visitors can be taken to the Paradise Beach close to Liapades. The boat will drop anchor in the marina at Paleokastritsa where those interested can visit a monk monastery of the Assumption built in the 13th century. You can have lunch at a fishermen’s restaurant we recommend called The Smurfs’ Tavern or you can shop around for souvenirs in the beautiful resort of Paleokastritsa, maybe the most beautiful on the island, though the beaches here are small with pebbles and rocks. During their trip on the sea visitors can take a glimpse of the beautiful Angelokastro mediaeval fortress. Boats wil leave the beach at 9:30 and are due to come back at 16:00.

But the most beautiful trips are those towards the isles of Othoni, Mathraki and Erikoussa, which offer good conditions for snorkeling or diving. The deserted island of Othoni is unique through its wild landscape with beautiful beaches and the turquoise blue water just like in the Caribbean. The region offeres the best conditions for scuba-diving around the wrecks lying at a depth of 18-25 meters. This however is recommended to those who have some experience in scuba-diving, but snorkelling in these waters will also be a delightful experience, giving you great satisfaction.

You can have lunch on the Mathraki island or a barbeque on one of the island’s tiny beaches, such as Erikussa. All the three islands are unique through their landscape. Snorkelling afficionados can benefit from assitance and dive several meters below the surface to see the ancient amphorae lying on the bottom of the sea. Experienced divers may adventure down to 30-50 meters and see the very old wrecks lying there as the place has along the centuries seen numerous sieges and naval battles. Neither is the number of the ships that went ashore, due to bad weather conditions, less significant. Harpoon and rod fishing can also be staged while professional divers can go “pearl hunting” to retrieve pearls from the huge shells (the size of a tennis racket) called ‘Pina’ lying down at a depth of 30 meteres.

Mini-trips are available for small groups interested in watching the sunrise from the Pantokrator peak, trips which also include visits to the Paleokastritsa monastery with stops at Bella Vista (named like that by the Italian soldiers who occupied the island in 1941; they went up and said ‘che bella vista!, ‘what a nice view!’ one of the most beautiful views in the Mediterranean. There is another stop in Makrades for shopping, where tourists can buy olive oil, almond oil (very good remedy against wrinkles) natural products, local spices and souvenirs. A stop can be made by request to have lunch or drink a coffee. Those interested can take a minibus to the Sidari resort and spend a pleasant night in its night-clubs at affordable prices.

Small groups of tourists can also request a guided tour around capital Kerkyra in a minibus.

Visits to Angelokastro, Agios Atanasios Monastery or the Afionas village are also available to all those interested who can admire its cosy taverns and beautiful sunsets. Horse riding is available in Agios Georgios Pagi where mountain bikes can also be hired and those interested can even participate in a hunting trip staged by the locals.

Even before departure, tourists can book bikes, cars, ATVs and taxis to take them from the airport to the hotels.
