The north-western region of Corfu is considered the most beautiful part of the island in terms of relief. More than 90% of the tourists who have been visiting Agios Georgios Pagi, particularly Germans and British come here to enjoy the unique landscape and to visit the bay surroundings. Tourists who have opted for individual tourism and not for the mass tourism, when one is surrounded by hundreds of people, will enjoy a certain array of daily activities.

Agios Georgios Pagi is not a suitable place for couch potatoes as there are so many places to see and explore. The place is recommended to all those who love both the sea and the mountain. It is a unique experience, more than just a simple sunbathe, in fact you don’t need to travel to Corfu for sunbathing, one can enjoy that in their own garden or while having barbeque near the pond at home.

First and foremost tourists are recommended to hire a boat (of 4 to 8 seats) from Sun Fun Club, for fees ranging from 60 euros per day (9:30-18.00) plus the fuel 20-40 euros (depending on the speed and the distance covered) in order to discover by themselves the island’s splendid and lonely beaches, lagoons and bays. You can hardly find a soul in these remote regions. According to the surveys conducted among the tourists, hiring a boat is by far the most beautiful experience of their holiday here. And the fact that participants can share the costs can also be an incentive. The landscape you are about to visit will surely take your breath away. And more than that, you will get a different perspective over the Corfu island from a hired boat.

Cars, scooters, ATVs, bicycles and motorcycles are also available for rent. Or you can try mountain trekking on horseback.

The region offers numerous hiking opportunities, long walks to the main tourist objectives and back, an activity very popular with the German tourists. Thus one can visit the Angelokastro fortress, the Afionas village with its unforgettable surroundings. Mountain bikers will not be disappointed either as the region offers excellent conditions for this activity. But if the tourist wants a dynamic and active holiday so that his or her adventure may appear unbelievable to those back home, here are some recommendations.

Sun Fun Club boast an over 30 year experience in watersports. All its boats are equipped with SOS sytems and the tourists are provided instructions on how to drive these boat. They also receive a map so that they may remain in the territorial waters. No one is allowed to leave in a boat until they have learnt how to drive it. Do not hesitate to include in your holiday schedule the opportunity of hiring a boat as you won’t need a license for it. In Greece no license is required for boats under 30 hp!

Such a boat will allow you to mount your own barbeque on one of the wonderful beaches in the north-western region. Or you can throw private parties on one of these beaches or islands, but for this you’ll need bigger, faster boats with skippers. Anyway this will also be an unforgetabble experience.

You may also take a trip on Mathraki island and admire the most beautiful sunset in the whole Greece. Groups no bigger than 12-14 people can reach the island in glass-bottom ships driven by experienced skippers and crews offering truly astonishing panoramic underwater vision.

Those who hire the boat can benefit from special discounts for diverse water sport activities such as: water skiing, mono skiing, banana & ring rides, kayaking and so forth. Sun Fun Club also offers boat taxi services taking tourists in one-day mini-trips to Paleokastritsa (in exchange for a return ticket of 25 euro). Worth visiting are the coves, the sea caves and the beaches in the area, where one can admire ‘the petrified ship of Odysseus, then at request, visitors can be taken to the Paradise Beach close to Liapades. The boat will drop anchor in the marina at Paleokastritsa where those interested can visit a monk monastery of the Assumption built in the 13th century. You can have lunch at a fishermen’s restaurant we recommend called The Smurfs’ Tavern or you can shop around for souvenirs in the beautiful resort of Paleokastritsa, maybe the most beautiful on the island, though the beaches here are small with pebbles and rocks. During their trip on the sea visitors can take a glimpse of the beautiful Angelokastro mediaeval fortress. Boats wil leave the beach at 9:30 and are due to come back at 16:00.

But the most beautiful trips are those towards the isles of Othoni, Mathraki and Erikoussa, which offer good conditions for snorkeling or diving. The deserted island of Othoni is unique through its wild landscape with beautiful beaches and the turquoise blue water just like in the Caribbean. The region offeres the best conditions for scuba-diving around the wrecks lying at a depth of 18-25 meters. This however is recommended to those who have some experience in scuba-diving, but snorkelling in these waters will also be a delightful experience, giving you great satisfaction.

You can have lunch on the Mathraki island or a barbeque on one of the island’s tiny beaches, such as Erikussa. All the three islands are unique through their landscape. Snorkelling afficionados can benefit from assitance and dive several meters below the surface to see the ancient amphorae lying on the bottom of the sea. Experienced divers may adventure down to 30-50 meters and see the very old wrecks lying there as the place has along the centuries seen numerous sieges and naval battles. Neither is the number of the ships that went ashore, due to bad weather conditions, less significant. Harpoon and rod fishing can also be staged while professional divers can go “pearl hunting” to retrieve pearls from the huge shells (the size of a tennis racket) called ‘Pina’ lying down at a depth of 30 meteres.

Mini-trips are available for small groups interested in watching the sunrise from the Pantokrator peak, trips which also include visits to the Paleokastritsa monastery with stops at Bella Vista (named like that by the Italian soldiers who occupied the island in 1941; they went up and said ‘che bella vista!, ‘what a nice view!’ one of the most beautiful views in the Mediterranean. There is another stop in Makrades for shopping, where tourists can buy olive oil, almond oil (very good remedy against wrinkles) natural products, local spices and souvenirs. A stop can be made by request to have lunch or drink a coffee. Those interested can take a minibus to the Sidari resort and spend a pleasant night in its night-clubs at affordable prices.

Small groups of tourists can also request a guided tour around capital Kerkyra in a minibus.

Visits to Angelokastro, Agios Atanasios Monastery or the Afionas village are also available to all those interested who can admire its cosy taverns and beautiful sunsets. Horse riding is available in Agios Georgios Pagi where mountain bikes can also be hired and those interested can even participate in a hunting trip staged by the locals.

Even before departure, tourists can book bikes, cars, ATVs and taxis to take them from the airport to the hotels.
